Note: Oregon Randonneurs membership is required for these events. You can download a membership form and bring it with you.
Driving Directions: From the North via 99W, the Travelodge is on the south side of Portland Rd (99W) before the large Chevy Dealer.
Special Note: We will have a room at the Travelodge on Saturday & Sunday nights to be used by the group. I am holding reservations for 6 additional double queens for Friday & Saturday nights. If you contact me, I'll turn over a room to you, your expense. The group room will be used for check-in, showers, and short naps etc. If you plan to sleep at the end of day one and not ride through we recommend that you reserve a room for Saturday night.
The route starts just north of the Willamette River in Newberg and heads south across the French Prairie towards Aumsville then East on Hwy 22 to Mill City and Detroit Lake. From Detroit Lake you climb to Breitenbush Hot Springs turnoff and return downhill to Detroit. Return to Lyons and head up toward Elkhorn for 15.5 miles. The pavement eventually ends, turn around and head the way you came back to Newberg. Day one is approximately 360K (225M).
Day 2 of the route follows Hwy 18 to Grand Ronde, then Northwest on the Little Nestucca Hwy to Pacific City, then north along the coast to Sandlake Dunes. Turn around and return the way you came to Newberg. Day one starts out flat and climbs gently to Breitenbush (elev ~2100, 150K) then another quiet and gentle 16 mile climb from Mehama to Elkhorn (elev ~1300, 244K). From Elkhorn it is downhill or flat for 110K. Day two is flattish involving a gentle climb over Sourgrass Summit (elev ~700) in both directions.
The event starts with the 600K you'll follow the same course The event starts with the 600K you'll follow the same course as far as the return trip from Breitenbush Hot Springs to Lyons at 217K. From Lyons you return to Newberg following the outgoing route.
In and about Newberg there is a 24-Hr Sharis and usual Fast Food fare. Pasquale's Restaurant, 111 W First St, is recommended for Pizza and other Italian food. Group and family oriented. For more info about Newberg services check the Chehalem Valley Chamber website.
